What is freeze and float in UPTAC Counselling?

Freeze and Float are two choices given to the candidates after they have received their seat in any round of UPTAC 2026 counseling. Candidates after each of the round allotments in Round 1 (27th June), Round 2 (3rd July) and Round 3 (9th July) should react and choose either Freeze or Float within the given time frame.

Freeze means you are satisfied with your current allotted seat and do not want to be considered for any upgrades in further rounds. Choosing Freeze confirms your seat permanently. You stop participating in subsequent allotment rounds for upgrades. In Round 4, all candidates are automatically frozen, there is no manual Freeze/Float option.

Float means you want to retain your current allotted seat but are also willing to be considered for a better option in the next round based on your locked preference list. If a higher-priority seat in your locked list becomes available in the next round, it is automatically allotted to you and your current seat is freed. If no better option is available, your current seat remains exactly as is. This is a completely risk-free option, you cannot end up with a worse seat than what you currently hold.

Freeze/Float choice submission deadlines for UPTAC 2026 counseling is:

  • Round 1: June 27-29, 2026
  • Round 2: July 3-5, 2026
  • Round 3: July 9-10, 2026

You must complete the Freeze/Float task on or before the deadline of every allotted round to get another round. Maximum number of candidates who are not satisfied with the seat allotted in Round 1 select Float choice to get an upgrade in subsequent rounds. Candidates who are fully satisfied with the seat and have been allotted their most preferred choice, decide to Freeze it to secure it completely.

In addition to Freeze and Float, candidates also have the option to Withdraw, this exits you from counselling entirely and your seat is returned to the pool. Withdrawal is available in Rounds 2, 3, and 4.
